During this visit, addressed by a professional guide, you will be able to certify the importance of tiles in the architecture and landscape of Oporto. The visit begins at the Palacete dos Viscondes de Balsemão that currently lodges the Material Bank (Banco de Materiais) and that has the purpose of safekeeping and preserving characteristic materials of the city, such as the tiles. The Carmo church´s lateral facade was covered by tiles in 1919 and is a definite "must see" of this tour. Towards the Material Bank Deposit that belongs to the ancient Devesas Factory (Fábrica de Devesas), you may observe this neo-islamic character styled building and it´s variety of different patterned tiles. The visit proceeds to the Praça da Liberdade until the São Bento Train Station, considered one of the most beautiful train stations in the world. It´s interior contains about 20 thousand tiles. The tour ends in the Capela das Almas (Souls Chapel) that is entirely covered in tiles.
